Naturalists frown on the proliferation of pitons in the wild because they lead to the gradual destruction of open faces of rock.
But my purpose in getting pitons, is merely to use them as stakes for pitching tents, or securing rigging of scaffolds and the like by driving them into the ground, and running cords through their open end, up and over, or possibly around the scaffolds in question.
Mountain climbers are willing to pay top dollar for the gear needed to save their lives. Pitons forged as single pieces of iron, are a lot stronger than eight inch pieces of stainless steel, bent around at one end to make a loop.
But I want simply to secure some lighting stands that have been carried into the woods or the forest, and all I need are stainless steel eye-hooks that measure 8 inches long. So that's what I ended up doing, buying simply a lot of 8 inch long stainless steel eye-hooks, and running off to the sander in the garage, and sharpening them that way, sanding off the threads till there is a reasonably sharp point at the threaded end. I can drive the eye-hooks into the ground with a mallet, and save a lot of money that way. After all, stainless steel eye-hooks cost about a dollar each, while these pitons, mind you, cost at least seventeen dollars. You do the math.
